Construction, Production and Development - 24/7 Service

el service travel

P/F El-Service was founded in 1988. John E. Olsen bought the former electrical department free from the local shipyard “Skála Skipasmiðja”. At that time we were only 6 people in the company. Since then the company has grown a lot and when we were the most, we were 35 employees.

In the beginning we mostly worked with the marine industry in the Faroe Islands but shortly after we turned the focus abroad as well. We immediately received several orders on large projects in Denmark. In the period from 1991-1998 we also had large projects in

Africa and Asia in collaboration with the Danish shipyard “Karstensens Skibsværft” in Skagen. These projects were parts of DANIDA projects. P/F El-Service headquarters are situated in Skála in the Faroe Islands. Due to increased demand abroad, we founded a subsidiary company in Denmark with currently 4 employees.

Our 6 departments:

Offshore Department

Foreign Department, all projects abroad

Installation Department

Switchboard Department, switchboards and automation

Fire Department, fire alarms and fire extinguishing systems

Sales Department, stock and sales

Because of increasing requests in the late 1990s, we moved into a larger building. Our new building has 3 floors, each floor is 1750 square meters. Our departments are on the second floor.

In 1999 we introduced the internationally recognized quality management system ISO 9001. This was to increase the quality of our products and also highly necessary when focusing on the offshore industry. P/F El-Service was the first of its kind in the Faroe Islands to introduce ISO 9001.  Since 2003 the quality system included all of our branches and has changed name to ISO 9001:2008.

Due to the increased demand abroad, we decided in 2007 to start a subsidiary company, El-Service International, in Skagen, Denmark. We also have 3 buildings that are used as offices and accommodation for our employees in Denmark.

Our many years of experience within almost every kind of electrical installation in the Faroe Islands and abroad qualifies us to resolve almost any task within electrical installations and automation systems. Travel opportunities have improved greatly in recent years and we are now able to offer service and inspection tasks abroad. In addition to production and delivery of the main switchboard for the ferry M/F Smyril, we also controlled the inspection of all electrical installation during the construction of the ferry which was built at IZAR Shipyard in Spain in 2005. We have also provided some service tasks around the world on some vessels for the offshore company P/F Thor.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Delta is reinforcing its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa this winter by relaunching daily* service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS), from  New York-JFK on Dec. 1. Fleet enhancements in service to Accra, Ghana (ACC), and South Africa are also underway.

The airline carries more than half a million customers between the U.S. and Africa each year on more than 34 weekly flights.

“These enhancements reflect our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re expanding our options for customers to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta.”    Delta currently operates daily service between Atlanta and Lagos and, with the resumption of daily New York-JFK service, will offer a total of 14 weekly flights to Nigeria in December through the first half of January and 10 weekly flights for the remainder of winter 2024.

Customers on this flight will have a choice of Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin experiences on the  Airbus A330-200 . Once on board, customers in Delta One can look forward to an extensive food and beverage program that includes thoughtfully curated menu options, as well as specialty snacks and premium beer, wine and spirits. Customers flying in Delta Premium Select will have more space to relax and stretch out, with a wider seat, deeper recline, an adjustable footrest and leg rest.

All customers can enjoy a wide selection of in-flight entertainment options – movies, TV series, music, podcasts and more – via Delta Studio. Delta also partners with diverse suppliers worldwide for in-flight products such as artisan-crafted amenity kits and beverages like Thrive Farmers Tea.

Premium upgrades in service to Ghana and South Africa

As the first U.S. airline to initiate service to Ghana, Delta remains the largest operator in the U.S.-Ghana market, offering year-round daily service from New York-JFK.

Furthermore, in late October 2024, Delta will upgrade its aircraft serving Ghana to the 281-seat Airbus A330-900neo , adding nearly 1,000 more seats each week, providing 30% more capacity between Ghana and the U.S. The aircraft features four differentiated cabin experiences: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Delta One Suites feature a sliding door for enhanced privacy, memory-foam mattress and soft bedding made from recycled materials. Delta One customers can also enjoy more beverage options and a seasonal chef-curated four-course meal.      Delta is also upgrading its aircraft from Atlanta to South Africa, where it operates 10 weekly flights year-round to Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). With the introduction of the higher-premium 35H  Airbus A350-900 , this upgrade will provide an additional eight Delta One Suite seats, bringing the total to 40, along with improved operational performance. Customers can look forward to these changes for JNB effective Jun. 20 and CPT on Sept. 9.   For more information and to book travel, visit delta.com .

El Paso weather: Expect strong winds, dust to impact driving conditions

el service travel

El Pasoans will have to brace for another round of strong winds and blowing dust on Thursday, April 25.

A wind advisory is in place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for 25 to 40 mph wind speeds and up to 60 mph gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

Some neighboring counties in New Mexico will also see a high wind warning.

Peak gusts will be in the afternoon, from 2 to 8 p.m., which could cause damage to trees, triggering possible power outages.

Traveling may also be difficult. The wind is expected to kick up dense dust from 1 to 7 p.m., with visibility as low as a half mile in some parts of the region. Some of the most dust-prone areas are Loop 375, US-54 near Alamogordo, and Interstate 10 between Lordsburg, New Mexico and Van Horn, Texas, according to the National Weather Service.

El Paso will also be under a red flag warning for elevated fire risk for dry and windy conditions. People are cautioned to avoid outdoor activities involving flames or sparks.

The wind will be back on Saturday, April 27, though speeds will be slightly weaker. Top speeds will reach 30 mph, and gusts will reach 40 mph.

While El Paso and its surrounding counties have had their share of strong wind , some relief is in sight. The middle of May usually marks the transition from wind to warmer temperatures, Jason Laney, meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said.

“Within the next several weeks we will likely start flirting with the 100-degree mark,” Laney said.

New Mexico weather

Northern Dona Ana County: Sunny. Patchy blowing dust this afternoon. Very windy with highs in the upper 70s. Southwest winds 25 to 30 mph, increasing to 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph this afternoon.

Otero County: Will be under the High Wind warning, with Cloudcroft getting the strongest gusts.

The Sacramento Mountains, West Central Tularosa Basin and White Sands are expected to get 30 to 40 mph winds with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.

Southwest to exit 4 airports and limit hiring following profit loss, Boeing plane delays

el service travel

Southwest Airlines said it will limit hiring and suspend operations at four airports in the U.S. and Mexico following a loss of profits and delays getting planes from Boeing .

In a release posted after the company's earnings call Thursday, the Dallas, Texas-based budget airline reported a net loss of $231 million in the first quarter of 2024. Southwest President and CEO Bob Jordan called those losses "disappointing," and said the airline is adjusting to "slower than planned growth for this year and next."

In an interview with CNBC ahead of the earnings call Thursday, Jordan said the company was weighing options for cabin reconfiguration to address its recent revenue shortfall.

“We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft,” Jordan told the network.

The airline said it now expects to end this year with approximately 2,000 fewer employees than 2023 through cost control initiatives, including limiting hiring and offering voluntary time off programs, not through furloughs or layoffs.

And with aircraft delivery delays from Boeing that could continue into 2025, Southwest said it is also planning to mitigate any operational and financial impacts while keeping reliable flight schedules for customers.

What airports is Southwest leaving?

After reporting financial losses in the first quarter of 2024, Southwest said it is closing operations at four airports, three in the U.S. and one in Mexico, the first time the airline has exited an airport since 2019.

  • Bellingham International Airport in Bellingham, Washington
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas
  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York
  • Cozumel International Airport in Mexico

Southwest also announced plans to cut about half its flights out of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and one third from the Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Although Southwest is pulling out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport, the company will maintain operations out of the William P. Hobby Airport in Houston.

Things To Do

Travel | ed perkins on travel: solo travel – difficult but improving.

Solo traveler

Travel is geared mainly to serve customers as couples. But for a variety of reasons, lots of travelers are not in a coupled relationship. In my case, I’m a widower; others include the never married, the divorced or separated, and even couples with diverse interests. Over the years, the travel business has given short shrift to these travelers, but suppliers have recently taken a closer look at what they see as a big potential source of business.

For years, some tour operators and cruise lines have been positioning themselves as “singles travel” specialists, but mostly their approach has been to match up singles into couples. True solo travel is different—true solo travelers do not what to share accommodations with strangers or even with friends who they might want to consider. They want sole occupancy of whatever arrangement they make.

If you’re traveled at all, you’ve seen that a lot of pricing is based on “per person, double occupancy,” or PPDO:

Most modern hotel rooms are designed to accommodate at least two people with two single, double, or queen beds; hotels charge the same rate for either one or two occupants.

Similarly, the vast majority of cruise cabins are set up to accommodate up to four people – two comfortably in separate small beds, combinable into a double, and two more uncomfortably in pull-down bunk beds.

Railroads charge each traveler the same for basic rail fare, but for compartments on overnight trains such as Amtrak’s long-distance trains, the price is the same for one as for two.

Although not promoted as such, rental cars are de facto PPDO: Adding a second passenger (or more) adds nothing to the daily or weekly rent.

Even with the prevalence of PPDO pricing, solo travelers have reasonable options:

Hotels. Although most new or recent hotels are designed for couples, small, older hotels in Europe often have single rooms designed for just one occupant, as do small Japanese business hotels. Daily rates are usually substantially less than but more than half the double-room rates. On my recent trips, I’ve found comfortable single rooms at small family-owned hotels in Brussels, Grindelwald, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, as well as in Japan. But most of the time, I have to settle for the usual double rate.

Tours. Despite a growing number of self-styled “Solo” tour operators, most fall back on the formula that “we’ll match you with a suitable roommate, and we won’t charge extra if we can’t find one.” But if you really want accommodations by yourself, you pay a single supplement. What may be close to everybody’s favorite tour operator, Road Scholar ( roadscholar.org/); formerly Elderhostel but open to travelers of any age) posts a pull-down options menu that includes “solo travelers only” filter. The choices are limited, but they’re genuinely for solo travelers. Google “solo travel” to find other outfits worth a look.

Cruise. For a long time, cruise lines ignored the solo traveler, relying instead on stiff single supplements for double cabins. But some of the newer liners feature cabins designed for one person. The good folks at Cruise Critic have compiled and posted a list ( cruisecritic.com/articles/which-ships-have-solo-cabins ) of cruise lines and cruise ships with true single cabins. Norwegian leads the pack in number of rooms and number of cabins per ships, but the other lines are catching up. Carnival, the biggest player, seems to be lagging the trend, but it does have a few on Cunard. Unfortunately, other than Cunard, no high-end lines yet make the list.

Trains. I don’t know any way to hack PPDO compartment prices on Amtrak, and Amtrak seldom puts them on sale. Sorry.

No Supplement Deals. Historically, tour operators and cruise lines have charged solo travelers the dreaded “single supplement” to occupy an accommodation designed for a couple. The supplement usually ranges from 50 percent more to double the PPDO rate. They’ve catered to solo travelers mainly through occasional “no single supplement” promotions, often for departures they believe are not likely to sell out – which means the best deals are last-minute deals. You can still find those.
